the exchange of

was

to take the average value of the

rates ruling

dollar between the 15th of the month in

respect of which the salary was paid and

the 15th of the preceding month.

Salaries

were, as they are still, paid at the end

$. This arrangement remained in

force until the end of the year 1901.

Before that date increases of salary had

been granted to many officers, but it would

be impossible to say how far those increases

were due to the low exchange exchange value

of the dollar and how far to the imreased

cost of living and to the additional

work and responsibility entailed on the

service by the steady growth in the prosper-

ity and importance of the Colony.

exchange value of the dollar was again

brought to the notice of the Secretary of

State.
